Wednesay!

For the first time in my life (at least in my memory) I was awake from 4:00 a.m. on Tuesday until 10:00 a.m. on Wednesday.  Oh wait - there was a three hour nap on Tuesday afternoon. But that faded away as I couldn't get back to sleep until Wednesday morning.

There are sure a lot of ads on night time tv about ailments for oldsters.

Tuesday

Well, feeling better lets a person move around and get some stuff done - like laundry, putting stuff away and making a real lunch instead of soup and sandwiches. Luckily Lee likes soup and sandwiches but feeling like cooking a real meal was far from getting done.

So this noon we had a real meal of pork cutlets, baked potato, corn "pudding," asparagus and some greenery. I think he was surprised.

And now I need to rest!

See the Doctor?

Yes, I got to see a doctor today and received two injections. I hope this works. Getting so exhausted that I slept from 2:00 p.m. till 8:00 p.m.

Now back to bed.

Sunday and Warmer

The thermometer shows 62, a nice warm day in preparation for tomorrow's high of 38.

I managed to get to the store. Then home to rest and talk to New Jersey Judith for the first time in several days. It's hard to talk when it makes you cough so I've been plenty silent around here. I'm sure Lee appreciates it.

I do feel a little better. Hope that trend continues.

Step. Gone.

We went to pick up some cough medicine. The mail man had been approaching when we left.
In order to avoid walking to the mail box in the cold air, I pulled up beside the mail box on the curb and Lee reached in and got the mail.

Instead of backing up and turning in the drive way, I pulled forward. It seems there is a sewer drain next to the gutter on the other side of the drive. There was this horrible, prolonged sound of ripping metal - I was moving very slowly. And then again as the loose part seen in the photo, hit the end of the drain.

Not a good day. When it gets warmer, we will go back to the place where we had them installed many years ago to make it easier to get in and out of the tall running boards.

No harsh words were uttered. Just stunned silence.

Thanks for the little white step stool in the garage to use instead.

Sunny Wednesday

Up to 40 degrees. I finally went out to get yesterday and today's mail. Just ads.

Still just lazing around feeling tired and weak from a cold.

Do I Hate a Cold?

Yes. Lee said I was coughing all night.  I didn't know one could cough in their sleep. I slept till almost 11:00 a.m. and have done almost nothing today.

Except heat up something for lunch and some chili for Lee for supper. I had some of my chicken soup which is supposed to help cure the common cold.

We'll see.

Sunday Morning

I decided to make some more chicken soup. This time I cut up the chicken breast and browned it in butter. I added carrots, celery, onion, poultry seasoning, chicken broth and some garlic salt and pepper.

It's ok but it seems like something is missing. Maybe I'll add some Kitchen Bouquet.

Yesterday I was anxious to hear the speech at 3:00 p.m. our time. My mistake was to lie down and watch it on the big tv in the bedroom. I woke up at 8:00 p.m.  I must have been tired from the four hours waiting in the waiting room yesterday.

Today I want to be awake for the entire Chiefs/Patriots game. I'll make some coffee and NOT lie down.

A Long Saturday Morning

We were at the E R from 7:45 till 11:30 a.m. Problems with dear husband. Kind nurses and doctor.

Back home and a long nap.

Winter Weather

We have a forecast for colder days and possibly some snow. Most of the expected stuff is supposed to be north of us but I decided maybe I needed to go to the huge grocery store and pick up some stuff.

I went early - about 8:00 a.m. Very few people were there. It was misting later in the day and now my phone weather app shows it is snowing.

Only two months till spring.

A Start

A week ago today I started another afghan, using left over yarns.  Today I have almost nine inches done. With single crochet, this may take a while!

Tuesday Car Repair Day

Today the car goes to the $garage for needed repairs. I guess you have to trust people but sometimes I wonder. The car is old - 1998 is old. Not too many miles and as long as it can go two miles there and two miles back, we'll be ok. That's the approximate distance from home to the grocers and the clinic.

But when the mechanic says the steering needs work, that gets my attention.

Another remark about a large rat in the front brake also made us pay attention. There are mice in the garage (eating the bird seed) but we hadn't seen a rat! The guy then said maybe it was a very large, well-fed mouse.

And of course, for the first time this winter I felt a cold coming on. So back to the over the counter medicine that I believe helps me. Drinking lots of water while I made chicken soup. I had planned to make it anyway but I've heard it's good for a cold.

I had it for supper and this morning for breakfast. The first time I ever thought about having something for breakfast besides cereal, bacon, eggs or French toast, pancakes or waffles, was when our boys were in grade school. The principal said if they want pizza for breakfast it's ok. It's better than no breakfast at all. Since then I have eaten many things for breakfast that may seem unusual.
If you want to have a Great Breakfast, check out what they serve in Germany. Now, that's a breakfast.

Now, off to the $garage for maintenance.

Later: The work was done by noon! I went back by means of their shuttle driver. Went to the cashier window and they advised me I needed to go out where I left the car in the $garage. The person who checked me in had the papers.  Back out to the place I had just walked through. Your agent just went to lunch but another one can help. So he tells me to go back to the cashier and he'd bring the papers in there.

What a weird way to make a little old lady in tennis shoes run around the business. They must have a good reason for this but I haven't figured it out yet.

Sunday and Football

We watched the team from New England and I am not happy that they are who the Chiefs will play this next week-end.

I never have liked that team from the east. Here's hoping for a KC win!

Some Days Just Slip By

I didn't write anything yesterday. The most exciting thing we did was go to the store.

Another light bulb burned out. I don't know where they test these bulbs but they don't last as long as the claim on the package. Maybe they test them for five years and then put them on the market. Another year adds up to the six years they claim. And then they burn out.

It wouldn't be so bad if it wasn't a ceiling light. I don't want to see either one of us up on a step ladder. So the hall will be dark until one of the tall sons arrives. I'm thinking about buying one of those gadgets seen on tv that hang up anywhere and lights up the area. I haven't seen one of those ads for a long time. We'll have to check out the local hardware store to see if they might carry them.

And now we have rain for a day and possible flurries tomorrow. It is winter.

Another Trip

Today was the day I see the Infectious Disease Control specialist. Such an intimidating title for a place created to keep a person well.

I was trying to think of a better name for this - Keeping You Well Before You Catch Something. Too long and awkward.

Oh well. As long as it works I guess it doesn't matter what they call it.

I am grateful for the compassionate people who work there.

Later I got a much needed hair cut. When someone you love tells you that you are looking "shaggy," it's time to get trimmed.

Doctor Day

When I worked at Montgomery Ward in Dodge City, we had one employee who cared for her elderly mother. There was one day every so often when she took time off to take her mother to a doctor appointment.  We used to call it "Doctor Day," and sort of privately snickered. How awful we were. We never were rude to the person but I guess we thought it was funny that her mother had to go to the doctor so often.

Well, now I have reached that elderly age. It's not funny. We go when we're told to return and appreciate the care they give us.  Once in a while I think, "Maybe I could just call them when something is bothering me," but they seem to want to keep track on a more regular basis.

So we travel the mile and two tenths to the clinic/hospital area. We are lucky to live so close. And with some experience with what happens as we age, I am ashamed that I was part of the people who thought it was funny. At least we didn't express negative thoughts to the blessed person who was doing the best she could for her mom.

Is Monday Wash Day?

It seems as though we wash any day of the week now but years ago it was definitely Monday when we washed clothes. There were even a set of tea towels embroidered with what a house wife would do on each day.

Tuesday was iron (naturally after the clothes were clean.) The only other two I remember were bake on Saturday and church on Sunday. Cleaning and shopping must have been in there too.

So today I did laundry. Then Someone decided it was the day to get the car washed AND get the oil changed. I can't remember the last time we did either one of those things but it has been a while.

At the car wash I had the gear shift in reverse instead of neutral. Slight glitch. At the auto shop we have an appointment at 3:00 so I'll miss my date with Dr, Phil. Oh well, Judy can fill me in.

Then Someone decided it was the day to get his hair cut.  I just finished using the vacuum to clean up the hair off the back porch.

Some days a woman's work is never done.

A Little Spring-like Day

They promised fifty-nine but the clouds stuck around and I don't think it got over fifty-six. That's close enough.

Another trip to the grocery store for some stuff that Someone didn't tell me he wanted yesterday.

Then back to the ball game that ended while we were gone. Last night I slept through the Dallas game. I need to get my sleep schedule adjusted.

I made a meat loaf. At the end of the cooking time I used the thermometer and it was a much higher temperature than "well done."  But when I cut into the middle, quite a bit of reddish "juice" ran out. Back into the oven for fifteen minutes more. Now that I think about it, I added Worcestershire sauce and some liquid smoke. Maybe that liquid was more brown than red.

It was definitely done and Lee liked it. He says it's better dry than juicy.

Voices

I always knew I couldn't sing. Well, I could, but nobody wanted to hear it.

Then the first time I heard my voice recorded on a wire recorder at a Prairie Pow Wow in Hutchinson, KS, about 1947, I was really struck by how different my voice sounded coming from outside my head.

I had a friend, Kay Streepy, who told me my voice was just like Arthur Godfrey's. As soon as she heard it, she knew who it was. I didn't know whether to be happy or sad about that remark.

And now I'm not complaining, but I wonder how some of the women on the news channels got their positions. Some are very nasal. I thought that was limited to Kansas voices. Some are not pleasant at all but there are a few in the lower register that sound soothing.

Back to why they were hired?  They are all very attractive.

January 4th

It only took three days for me to miss writing a blog.

I guess one reason for nothing new to write about is that there is nothing new happening here!

I did make chili yesterday. It was cold when I picked up the mail from the box near the curb.

I crocheted a little, did not nap so I went to bed early. After a restless night I was awake at 3:00. It may be another early bedtime tonight.

Day Two of the New Year

Same song, second foul up. Yesterday our cable company and I visited for forty-five minutes or so.
The Set Up Wizard appeared on my television and I could not move it away. Unplug power box. Wait fifteen seconds. Replug and restart. This was before I called for help.

Much later it came back on after the helper sent some signals.

Same thing this morning. It happened both times when I was adjusting the volume.

Tomorrow a man is coming out to "solve this so it won't happen again," in the words of the agent.

Keep your fingers crossed.

Later. During a nap, we received a call from Cox. Cancel tomorrow's visit! A very nice person helped me and he figured out what had happened.

All is ok.  It seems my plump fingers hit an input button and caused all kinds of mischief. Actually, not plump, just wandering.

Happy New Year

After a long nap yesterday afternoon, I was up for the midnight hour in New York, here and then back to bed.

I was typing a document about 11:30 p.m. I thought I was wide awake. I wanted to save it as a draft so I clicked on "Draft."  It all disappeared.

One must click on "Save As Draft."

Time for bed after that and I managed to rewrite it this morning.

Our high for today was 18. They promise the 50's by the end of the week. I hope the weather people are correct.

Happy New Year!
