Beau

Beauregard, the only dog that ever bit me.

What did I expect? Taking away what I thought was a paper plate but was a crust of pizza.

He was a good dog. When he became ill in the early '80's, we drove him to the veterinary school at K-State where they could not save him.

Wally 2000 - 2010

Photos both with and without his winter coat.

When we were temporarily living in apartment complex, they wanted a photo of our dog. He was totally worth the extra $50 per month to have him there.

So, I took them both versions. Perhaps they would have come to the conclusions we had two dogs.

He could have been a  canine spy!

Dog People

Our first dog was a Boxer.
L. always wanted a Great Dane so I picked out a Basset Hound
instead, thinking that would avoid a LARGE dog.
It didn't work. We got the Great Dane puppy, Bruno, seen above
with Duffer and L.
So far we've had nine dogs in the sixty-one years we've been married.
Four were Great Danes.
Now we are down to two small rescue dogs - terrier mixes - and cheaper to feed.

Wild Grass

A lovely photo of grass growing in Oregon (thanks PN.)

Why does it remind me of my hair in the wind? Thin on top, multi-colored and straight.

Rose

I have always liked photos that have back lighting.
This was the lucky outcome of facing the sun.

The Handsome Brown Boys (ca. 1900)

This is my dad (on the chair) and his brother, Harvey Lee.
It was quite common for boys to have long curls at that time.
In an article on Douglas MacArthur, the author stated that the
general's mother dressed him "like a girl, with long curls."
Not an uncommon site at the beginning of the
twentieth century!
I particularly like the bow in Dewey Russell's hair

A November Afternoon

With the temperature at 75, I walked the backyard. Our neighbor's
Pampas Grass was almost glowing in the sunlight. As usual, the wind was gently
moving  them. I hope the forty mile per hour gusts stay in Manhattan.
One thing nice about "the wind comes sweeping down the plain" is that
we get rid of any air pollution.
I know that quote is from "Oklahoma" but it sweeps here too.

Colorful Decorating

The above green house is in Kansas.

This one is in Portland, OR.
Too bad they aren't side by side.
What a wake up that would be for the neighborhood every morning.

I think this is one of those situations where the phrase,
"What were they thinking?"  might apply.

Overgrown

I lived in this house from 1944 to 1947.  It looked like the black and white photo then.
Today it is in total disrepair.
The bushes hide the house but the roof is damaged and the whole place
needs paint.

I wish it had stayed in our family. Built by the McCandless family
when there was nothing north of 12th Street but wheat fields.

11th and Main Street

There is a proposal for a Dollar General Store on this corner. Across the street is part of the Hutchinson Clinic. To the south is a small office complex so there are some businesses in the area.

However, this type building will not be compatible with the area. Some offers have been made to make the exterior something besides vertical sheet metal but nothing in writing yet.

The other crime is that they plan to tear down that magnificent residence to make room for more parking.  What a disappointment to lose more of our historical homes in a nice little city.

The city council turned down by a vote of 5 - 0 the request for a change of classification!  No Dollar General there.  There are other places in town including vacant buildings that could be used!

A Tree of Many Colors

This tree in our back yard is a puzzlement. I see yellow, pink and purple leaves as it changes its dress before disrobing completely.

New Tires for an Old Van

We bought this van second hand in Texas seven years ago.

Since then we've only made one trip across state lines to Texas. Not traveling makes tires last a long time but not forever.

I do believe that these new tires are probably worth more than the van.

And the Rain Came -

and re-carpeted the lawn! The wind was fierce but the leaves were so wet there was no blowing. This morning it is 20 degrees colder and we see the sun.

I love fall.
