The Disposal of Drugs

A trip to the clinic for a regular check-up for Lee today.

He was told by the doctor that he didn't need to take two medications that had been prescribed earlier.
I needed to pick up something for me at the drive-thru pharmacy so I asked the nice clerk (by the way, they are All nice there!) if she would mind throwing these in the big, new container for expired, or no longer needed, pills.

Sorry, she could not. I said ok, I would do it when I came inside the next time. I teased her and said I was so sorry that they didn't trust her to throw them away. She said the rules is there so that none of the employees would be tempted to "take" any of the pills. I guess I understand that.

But calcium and Fosamax?

More on Credit Cards

Today's mail brought a letter from brand a company with two credit cards enclosed. Both of them had Lee's name on them and they each had a different number. They call them prepaid Visa cards. Another line advises that "this offer is not a product or service endorsed or sponsored by Metabank or Visa.   Hmmm.

I don't know what that means and I want to cut them up and pitch them. Somebody else wants to file them.

I think we're going to need another file.

Saturday

A cool morning and a trip to pickup a prescription.

Then on to the ATM only to find out the card is NOT in my wallet. All the way home I hoped it was in Lee's bill fold because I didn't remember taking it out of mine. Also hoping it wasn't lost.

Thank goodness it was in Lee's wallet on the desk. He seldom carries it with him. And why do we only have one card?

It also crossed my mind that I should check to see what one does if the debit card does disappear.  I suppose call the bank" tout suite."

After all that excitement, I had to have a nap.

The Big Rain

Disappointed to see in the paper that our rain total was .05". I'm surprised the streets got wet and under the trees it might have been dry.

Back to the store for things we forgot, or things we decided we needed. I think we are stocked up now for a while. I like to cook - I just don't like buying the stuff to cook with.

There is a program at the library tonight that I'd like to see. Various people around our town talk for a short time and show slides and tell their stories. I have only seen one and it was really interesting. I hope Greg puts this one up on the net.

A Break in the 90's

Last night we actually had a little rain. I don't know how much because we no longer have a rain gauge. I'll check tomorrow's paper for the total.
More importantly, the rain brought cooler temperatures. We were in the low '70's this morning and it was wonderful. I wish the front could cover the country with cooler air.

Wouldn't it be great if all that rain in the east could fall on the fires in the west?

Traffic Violations

Yesterday morning a red Blazer ran two stop signs in front of me. At the first one, I had the right of way at the corner of Rambler and Meadowlark. He sailed right on through. There was no close call but he didn't even slow down.

The second was only two blocks south, at 17th and Rambler Road, He/she turned right onto 17th with no hesitation. The tag was from McPherson County. I'm pretty sure they have stop signs there.

I guess I'm sensitive to this is because several years ago, I waited at a stop sign for a car to go by and my wheels did not come to a complete stop. That's called running a stop sign. Now that I'm $105 wiser, I make sure that all four tires are not rolling. Years ago I had a friend who said that all you needed to be legal was to get all four wheels to stop so he would slam on the breaks with that horrible sound and proceed. This would be in an isolated area with no police around. If there had been law enforcement there, he would have gotten a citation for exhibition driving.

Be careful out there.

A Surprise Day

Our older son came to see us today. I didn't tell his dad so he was quite surprised.

So good to see him. Wish all other seven offspring (includes four grands) could have come too.

Starship?

Why does this remind me of the Enterprise? We needed a new apple/slicer/corer. Walmart came through for $3.48.

Breakfast of Champions

Yesterday I made ham salad. I bought some really good ham and to finish it I decided to make ham salad. I always liked the ham salad my mom made. Honestly, I don't remember ever making it myself. I knew it had hard cooked egg, mayo, pickle relish, and onion, if you want it. But didn't remember any specific recipe.

So of course, I googled it. A small amount of mustard was included. Using the blender, I ground up the ham, mixed it altogether and let it ripen all day. We had the sandwiches for supper last night and it was really good. There was quite a bit left. I told Lee we are going to have to have this again soon before it "expires."

So this morning I did.

A Mystery

The dog tag was found in the hall.  Lee saw it and picked it up. Later he saw the wire imbedded in the carpet in the dining room. Both ends were hooked into the carpet. I tried to pick it up and could not believe that BOTH ends were caught. I had to move it back and forth to release it. That wire is so strong that neither one of us could bend it.

This was from Jill's collar. She likes roll around on the carpet before she comes to rest. How in the world that became stuck in the rug with the tag in a different location, I will never know.

We are just glad it wasn't lost in the backyard jungle.

Checking the BP

With some high blood pressure at the ER Wednesday morning, we were told to get it checked every day for a while.

This is the second day that Lee and I made the trip to the clinic. He didn't take his meds for it this morning and it was lower today than it was yesterday when he did take the BP medicine.

My theory, take the RX and quite taking the BP at home!

Oh well. We need to get a new wrist cuff for checking it out here. The old one about doubled the score on the one at the doctor's office. Nurse offered to throw it in the trash. I was all for it but someone seemed to want to keep it as a keepsake!

The Roof Story is Done

Today we paid the roofing contractor.  I am really glad that is taken care of. We are happy with the job and Lee told him if anything else breaks, we'll call him.

It's hot.

What a Day

We spent four hours at the hospital ER this morning - 1 a.m. till 5 a.m.  Home just in time to watch morning tv. I slept till 10:30.

Nothing serious, just painful for my husband.  Old age calls for many compromises!

Free Bar

This was last Friday's Freebie from our local store. A delicious, however small, Ghirardelli milk chocolate caramel tasty treat.

I do love free stuff.

A New Day!

I woke up feeling as good as I ever do! The sleeping must have helped.

It's still hot. We are eight inches below the normal precipitation for the year. Not much snow over the winter and very little rain.

I am enjoying putting up photos of our town on facebook's site, "Kansas Phtography 2.0."  My mother-in-law used to make fun of me taking pictures of buildings. I really took more of people and the family but I now have a lot of things recorded that are no longer here -  like buildings and people.

This is the Kirk Building, built in 1920 and was the former home of the motor car company. My dad bought all his Hudsons there. It was exciting to ride to the upper floors on an elevator large enough to hold a car.

A Lost Saturday

Woke up feeling "not good."

Spent most of the day sleeping.

Feeling better tonight.  Hope for a better day tomorrow.

Free Stuff

We tried the drink that the store offered free a few weeks ago on Friday. Lee said it tasted like medicine.

I thought it was because we had just tried a Swedish Fish which was free last week.

Nope. It even smells like medicine when left in a glass. Wonder if it does impart energy?

The fish are gummies and not as tough as some.

This week it's a Ghiradelli Chocolate bar.  I'll get that one for sure!

Thursday

This morning was the time for several errands. So we were out b 8:15 hoping to finish before it got too hot.

The clinic, Walmart and the grocery store. Something has happened to my lower back. I have no trouble sitting but moving around and getting in and out of the car is not so great. So I drove and Lee did all the getting in and out of the van.

At the grocers, we needed two things. He went in and fifty-five minutes later he came out with a mucho number of bags.  I was seriously thinking about calling the police or an ambulance to see if he was ok. No, not really. But at least calling the store and asking if anyone in there had passed out in an aisle.

It was starting to get warm (!) and if there had not been a little breeze,  I would have had to go inside.

That heat will get ya!

Finally - The Roof is Done

The workers left about 3:30. I felt so bad for them having to work on that hot roof for four days. I guess they might be used to it. Each day there was a big cooler delivered by the company full of water bottles.

Now we wait for the billing!

Later in the day somebody wanted a hamburger. I think the wait from 8:25 till 8:45 was a new record. There are two drives into the window and it was a long wait. The car in front of us, a BMW SUV, left in a huff before he reached the paying spot. So when they verified our order, it was, "A diet coke and three cookies?"  Nope. A cheeseburger and small fries. I don't know how they keep it straight anyway unless there are cameras at the ordering spot.

Another lovely ninety-three degree days in the books.

Roofing Today

At 8:30 a.m. the roofers arrived. I had already parked the van in front of the house and left the garage door open. They need access to an outlet for their nailing machines.

Jill is lying under my chair/feet. She doesn't like that noise on the roof.

I wish they could finish today but that is doubtful.

More Things Lost

We spent several minutes (seemed like hours) searching for a lost blood pressure cuff.
It was under the bed.

That was the most exciting thing that happened today except that the roofers must not work on Saturday. After a Friday afternoon with thunder but no rain and no roofers, I thought they would be back today.  I guess they are shooting for Monday now.

Things Lost

Some days I feel like my skill at depth perception while walking has left me. I may bump into a door or walk a little weird for a step or two.

Today I had washed some dishes by hand - things I do not put in the dishwasher. They were piled on the drain board with a small skillet on top. Suddenly the skillet started sliding (alliteration?) Quick as a cat, I grabbed it mid air before it hit the floor!

I was as amazed as you are.

Roofers

I heard the dogs barking and when I looked out the window, I saw a pickup and trailer backed into our drive-way. A ladder was up to the roof and there were three men there tearing off shingles.

No phone call that they were coming. No knock on the door to see if we needed to get our vehicle out of the garage.  Strange.

Later one fellow came to the door and asked if we needed to get our car out. No, but a little late. I didn't say it to him but I think I'm getting cranky, cantankerous or maybe that should be spelled "old."

Fairly Quiet - so far

We stayed around the house. There was not a lot of booming going on. Just a few loud bangs once in a while. Jack just slept through it except for some barking at 3:00 a.m. That may have been the dependable newspaper delivery person!

Jill has paced a little but has not cried or looked too miserable.

I just tried my new favorite snack: butter melted in a skillet, Cheery Oats (as we used to call them.)  A little salt and a sprinkling of garlic powder. The suggestion was some parsley flakes but the jar we have is so old, I didn't want to spoil the batch.

More Cable News

Well, we got our bill from the cable company. I guess when they bring out new equipment there is a nice little charge of $75. They didn't tell me that when I called them to tell them I didn't believe I could attach the new boxes to all three televisions. A technician came out, found some old wiring that needed replaced and installed the three new boxes.

Then after that was done, there was nothing but trouble from June 7th till June 25th. Several calls later and a tech came out and installed a new "brain" box. The first one was defective.

I don't know if the charge was for when the tech replaced the cable, or when the other tech brought in the new box. I guess we were lucky it wasn't a double charge for equipment. After all, I toted home the three boxes the first time - when all I wanted was a new remote.

A very nice gentleman took my call today. They should have told me there was a charge. He also removed some other charge that was put on. Lee was ready to tell them to come get all of their equipment. (He's so impulsive.)  So the check I wrote is about eighty dollars less than the bill shows.
He assured me that the discrepancy will be taken care of on the computer billing. I hope he's right.

Weird Tone

Out and about for something we forgot (!) at the store yesterday. Driving along we heard this loud tone. It was almost like something you would hear from an iPhone only louder. It sounded like it came from inside the car.

Neither one of us know what it was. My phone was plugged in at home recharging. I wondered if it was some kind of alarm but nothing happened.  No air bag deployed. No signals on the dash.

I doubt if we'll ever know.

Sunday

We had a lot of thunder over night and some rain. I won't know the amount until tomorrow's paper arrives. Our rain gauge is long gone.

So far I have not heard any fireworks but Lee tells me he heard some late last night far, far away. The only good thing about having a hearing loss is that I did not hear them from inside the house.

We did drive to Walgreen's for a needed item (Sweet Tea which was on sale!) and heard one loud report near a firework stand in a parking lot for Hayes record store. That store is gone.

Also, Sears, Dillard's, Service Merchandise, Penney's, K-Mart, Target are all closed. No wonder the city has lower sales tax figures. They need to cut expenses so they will start with the art community.
Maybe they'll pick up some extra money with the sales tax on all the stands selling fireworks.
