We used to have "gas wars" on East 4th Street when gas went down from twenty-five cents a gallon to eighteen cents. I sometimes forgot that the tax was included in that price and tried to add the two cents on the dollar for Kansas state sales tax. The guy who pumped the gas always explained that wasn't necessary.
Those days I earned fifty cents an hour as a Kress sales clerk. Seems comparable to today's price when minimum wage is around seven dollars.... approximately half that for a gallon of gas.
