House from the movie "Picnic"
This is the house in Nickerson, KS, that was used as the home for Kim Novak, Susan Strasburg, Betty Field and their roomer, Rosalind Russell in the movie "Picnic."
And here is the alley behind the house where William Holden arrived to upset Cliff Robertson's
Labor Day picnic.
Several other local areas were used: Sterling Lake, a railroad track near Salina and grain
elevators in Hutchinson and the scenes at the picnic were in Riverside Park in Halstead KS.
The movie is from 1955 but still fun to watch.
The play was written by Kansas author, William Inge and
two years earlier the play was on Broadway with Paul Newman in his debut role of
Hal's rich friend, Alan Seymour. Newman wanted the role of Hal but the director, Josh Logan, didn't think he was
muscular enough for the role (!) so Ralph Meeker was cast.
Later Newman moved into the lead.
(This information about the Broadway play is from the internet.)

Cat on Coffee
I like cats but not enough to own one. This was several years ago at a friend's house.
Keeping warm!

Bubba Stik
Don't you wish you had one?
Purchased in Oklahoma at a truck stop on the turnpike.
Last night I thought one of us might be using it soon.
12:01 a.m.
Ladder at the foot of the bed.
Large plywood table leaf on bed.
Husband on ladder with one foot on table leaf, trying to place a small screw into the
light globe on the ceiling fan.
Never did get the original Phillips head screw to replace itself.
Wonder of wonders! A brand new packet of ceiling fan screws was found in the garage.
After repeating "Righty-tighty) several times, the deed was done.
Someone (not me) was afraid if the bowl fell during the night,
it might hit one of the dogs.
Never a dull moment when an idea strikes.

"Our" Snake
L. says he's about two feet long. In this photo he looks longer than that to me.
He wants to transport him to the country. I like him here. I'm sure he eats stuff
that we don't want in the yard. The dogs see him but don't attack.

Outhouse
My granddad was a carpenter. He built these small outhouses and I am lucky to have one of them
There is a star in the door and it is a "three holer." He even made a small catalog from pages from a regular catalog, held together with string. My grandmother may have done that but I'm not sure.
On the reverse of the wooden box is the word "cobs."
Boy, am I glad we are past the days when we had to use these on the farm. I never lived in the country but I visited there every summer. I remember the heat, the wasps and a certain odor.
