And here is the alley behind the house where William Holden arrived to upset Cliff Robertson's
Labor Day picnic.
Several other local areas were used: Sterling Lake, a railroad track near Salina and grain
elevators in Hutchinson and the scenes at the picnic were in Riverside Park in Halstead KS.
The movie is from 1955 but still fun to watch.
The play was written by Kansas author, William Inge and
two years earlier the play was on Broadway with Paul Newman in his debut role of
Hal's rich friend, Alan Seymour. Newman wanted the role of Hal but the director, Josh Logan, didn't think he was
muscular enough for the role (!) so Ralph Meeker was cast.
Later Newman moved into the lead.
(This information about the Broadway play is from the internet.)
